Ventas appoints Carey S. Roberts as general counsel

Ventas, Inc. announced that Carey Shea Roberts will join the company as executive vice president, general counsel and ethics and compliance officer, during the first quarter of 2020. In this role, Roberts will lead the company’s legal, compliance and enterprise risk management functions, reporting to Debra A. Cafaro, Ventas Chairman and CEO. Roberts succeeds T. Richard Riney, the company’s first general counsel, who recently retired.

“We are thrilled to welcome Carey Roberts to our executive leadership team. As a successful public company general counsel with an outstanding legal career, she brings extensive experience, energy, judgment and intellect to Ventas, complemented by her proven ability to serve as a partner and legal advisor to boards of directors and management teams,” said Cafaro. “We thank T. Richard Riney, our long-serving and talented original general counsel, for his incredible contributions to Ventas. Rick demonstrated unbounded integrity and loyalty as an inspirational leader of the company for more than two decades. We are deeply grateful for Rick’s critical role in making Ventas into the large, diversified and high-performing S&P 500 company it is today.”

Roberts joins Chicago-based Ventas from Assurant, Inc., where she served as executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary. Roberts previously served as deputy general counsel, corporate secretary and chief compliance officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. Prior to joining Marsh & McLennan Companies, Roberts was a partner in the corporate practice of Covington & Burling LLP where she counseled companies in a wide range of industries, including financial services, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and information technology. Roberts serves on the boards of directors of The International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution and The American Alpine Club. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and her law degree from the George Washington University Law School, both with honors.

“I’m excited to join Ventas and lead its outstanding legal, compliance and enterprise risk departments,” Roberts said. “I look forward to working with Debra and the rest of the Ventas team to support the company’s continued success and commitment to sustained high performance, excellence and integrity.”
