Shubert redevelopment hits governmental snag

by Mike Moran
Minneapolis-St. Paul

The Shubert Theater
Redevelopment on downtown Minneapolis' Shubert Theater has taken a blow, losing $2 million from a state bonding bill when Gov. Tim Pawlenty used his line-item veto to cut the funding.

Pawlenty removed a total of $85 million from the $300 million bill, but the loss of the $2 million is especially disheartening for the redevelopment of the Shubert. More than $36 million has been raised of the total $41 million needed. Construction is slated to start following once an additional $2 million is raised.

The redevelopment calls for the creation of a 900-seat venue, dubbed the Minnesota Shubert Performing Arts & Education Center, which would be dedicated to dance programming. Ground is still expected to be broken this year despite the loss of funding, but a clear timeline is not known.
