The new Gibbs Elementary School in Rochester, Minn., is on target for completion of the 83,000-square-foot building in time for the upcoming 2009-10 school year.

Knutson Construction, working in phases, will give the school district occupancy of some classroom as early as June, the Rochester school board heard this week.

After the classrooms, the kindergarten and office areas will be completed next, followed by the music offices and gymnasium, which will complete the project in July.

LEED certification will be sought for the building, which will utilize several green design elements. In addition, the classrooms will feature interactive white boards.

"It's going very well -- very, very well," said James Kelly, Rochester public schools' construction services coordinator.
