The University of St. Thomas will break ground in 2010 on a $66 million student center with a planned opening in 2012.

The new student center, which will be environmentally friendly and energy efficient thanks to architect and designer Opus Northwest, will feature food, shops and student-office groups. The university expects the environmental features to add roughly $500,000 to the total construction costs.

An underground parking structure is currently being discussed for the new student center, which will have to wings that wrap around the corner of Summit and Cretin. Other amenities the building will feature include residential dining facilities, a ballroom and gathering areas and lounges.
