LEED 2009 passes member ballot

by Walter Kovacs

An update to the LEED green building certification program, LEED 2009, has passed a member ballot and will become the next step in LEED's rating system evolution in 2009. LEED 2009 includes major technical advancements that focus on improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and addressing other environmental and human health outcomes.

Regional credits worth extra points in a project's environmental zone will be a new part of LEED 2009. A scientific re-weighting of credits has changed the allocation of points among LEED credits, reflecting urgent climate change and energy efficiency concerns.

The re-weighting is one of the most significant changes and increases the importance of green building as a contribution to immediate and measurable solutions for energy independence, climate change mitigation and other global priorities.

Eight years of market and user feedback have culminated in LEED 2009's Credit Interpretation Rulings, ensuring clarity for project teams. The new credit alignment structure, creating a more elegant and harmonized rating system, resets the bar for high-performance green buildings. Major new technical developments will now be more easily trialed and evaluated before being included in LEED 2009.
