St. Paul's popular Mississippi Market has had its hopes for grants and loans from the city's STAR fund to build a new natural foods co-op dashed after the expected money was denied. Mississippi Market still plans on building the store and held a ceremonial groundbreaking on November 6. A board of St. Paul residents recommended the request for $200,000 in grant monies and a $400,000 low interest loan for Mississippi Market but Mayor Chris Coleman denied it over a city requirement on union organizing options. The proposed store will be built on a 1.2 acre parcel of polluted land in the stalled Brighton Development. The new Mississippi Market will be a one-story, 13,300-square-foot building featuring a deli with seating and a community room for meetings and classes as well as a 55-car parking lot. Construction is expected to be completed next summer. Mississippi market's members have invested $240,000 for the $6 million project near the intersection of W. 7th Street and Otto Avenue.
