Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up, where did you go to school?
I grew up in Lake Zurich, a northwest suburb of Chicago, as the second of four boys. I attended Lake Zurich High School and received my bachelors of science in renewable energy from Illinois State University. I’m currently halfway through DePaul University’s MSRE (Masters of Science in Real Estate) program.
When you were young, what did you aspire to be?
A professional football player, until I stopped growing at a sound 5’7″. Then I thought I was going to be an architect taking lots of cad classes in my younger years.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I got my start at Peak Construction right out of college. I originally came in to help temporarily with accounting while I searched for a career in the renewable energy industry. Fast forward eight years later and I’ve discovered I thoroughly enjoy construction and real estate. Life’s funny that way.
Did you have a mentor who helped you get on your feet, or is there someone you turn to now for support?
Growing up, my dad is who I turned to for help and guidance along the way. During my professional career, Michael Sullivan and Dale Carter have served as my mentors in the industry.
What does a day in the life of David Michael look like?
Wake up and go for a run with my fiancée, Cori, and our dog, Simon; grab a quick breakfast, get ready and head to work to take on the day’s challenges. After work, I attend night class two days a week at DePaul.
What do you like most about your job?
My favorite part about my job is solving problems each and every day in a fast-paced environment.
Looking to the future, what do you hope to achieve/work on that you haven’t already?
One goal of mine is to build a data center.
How do you spend your time away from the office?
I enjoy traveling, hunting, fishing and anything outdoors.
What is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Where do you hope to go next?
Cape Town, South Africa. New Zealand is on my list of places to go next.
Who would you like to see answer these questions?
Matt Knafel at MK Asset or Chris Mergenthaler at Darwin Realty.
