Forbes and Kiplinger’s both love their lists. And once in a while, these lists give the cities of the Midwest a bit of love.
That’s the case with Kiplinger’s list of the 10 Best Cities for the Next Decade. Three Midwest cities made the magazine’s list, Rochester, Minn.; Topeka; and Des Moines.
Rochester ranked the highest at number six. Kiplinger’s pointed to the city’s new Minnesota BioBusiness Center, which opened in Spring of 2009, and, of course, the Mayo Clinic. Des Moines came in right behind, at number seven. Low-cost housing and a family-friendly community were the cited draws here.
Finally, Topeka came in at number 10 on the list. The city is a capital city, of course, so that helps keep unemployment manageable. Good hospitals, quality schools and, of course, friendly people were all positives pointed out by Kiplinger’s.

Des Moines article for one of 10 Best cities should of mention the suburb of Ames approx. 22 to 32 miles North wih Iowa State University.
Many electric and biological, and bio tech invenstions are coming out of the ISU research park by companies working with the university. Also, both the computer and fax machine were invented at ISU earlier.
I second that!
